Today (and a little of yesterday) has revolved around food. We have baked and cooked until the fridge is full of meals and the esky packed with treats to take down to SH's parents. While he is away we will eat very well, without much effort which is even better!!!

Banana cupcakes with cream cheese icing with a banana chip to finish them!!

Licorice Allsort slice, my f-i-l and SH love licorice so this is especially for them!

Moroccan chicken with preserved lemon casserole

Orange cake - super easy, made with a whole orange, now iced! which hides the dip in the middle!

Layered family casserole (from the school cookbook - I LOVE that book!)

Tuna mornay - a good standby!

Pancakes for brunch, with bacon and maple syrup - YUM! SH is the best!!

Pecan and choc chip cookies

Needless to say not much else was ticked off the list. Promised myself in Winter I wouldn't say this but I would love it to cool off just a little!!!

The patient is home!

The patient arrived home on Thursday afternoon and although he is very sore he is happy to be back in his own bed. We have plenty of drugs to keep him painfree. His hip where they took the skin graft is the sorest part at the moment. The surgery went as planned so now it is a waiting game to let it heal!!! Thank you so much for all the messages of support , they helped so much in a topsy turvey week!

I feel like today I am getting back into normality and some type of rhythm, so much was let go last week! By 9 this morning I had seen SH and the 'horsey' one off to a very important horse competition, done 3 loads of washing and pegged it out, made banana cupcakes, walked the dog, showered, emptied the dishwasher, ironed, fed the boy breakfast and made the shopping list!!! My Mother in law had a hip replacement surgery yesterday so I will try and get some baking and meals made today for SH to take down tomorrow to feed his Dad until she is home. It went well which is a relief.
Okay the shopping is calling before it gets too warm! I am so glad to be back!!!

It's been a long day , work and then a pony club meeting with a surgeons appointment for my HS thrown in so I am off to bed. HS is having surgery tomorrow on his hand which will also involve a bone graft from his hip....not looking forward to it! Have some stitching packed for the hours after I finish work when I will sit with him.....please keep us in your thoughts.

Apple cake

The 'horsey' one was flicking through the school cookbook the other day and decided to make an Apple tea cake that caught her eye. When she actually started she realised that it wasn't in fact a tea cake but a really delicious Apple cake with 3 layers. It was SO good that we have been requesting it again and soon!!!

1& 1/2 cups self raising flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
125g butter melted
4 to 5 stewed apples or 1 large can pie apples
Topping:
cinnamon
pecan nuts (approx 8) or flaked almonds
Preheat oven to 180 degrees C
Place all cake ingredients except the apples into a bowl and mix well. Add the melted butter and mix well.
Press 3/4 of the mixture into an ungreased 20cm springform tin. Cover with well drained apples. Drop dobs of remaining mixture over top. Sprinkle with cinnamon and place pecan nuts or flaked almonds over top.
Cook for 50-55 minutes.
This cake can be served as a warm dessert or cake for morning or afternoon tea or no special occassion at all!!!

A few weeks ago I said that I had been doing some secret sewing that I couldn't share yet. Well now I can! Calidore and I decided to do a mug rug swap a very long time ago, I had received mine from her but she was still waiting and quite possibly thought she would never ever see anything!!! It was her Birthday on Thursday so what better reason to get motivated and become familiar with my sewing machine again! This is the mug rug I made which I sent with a Cath Kidston mug and some other goodies. I made it out of some charm squares and am really happy with it.

Today I have made another one for a very special friend, I cannot say more yet , I am not sure if she looks on here or not but I'd like it to be a surprise. I also got her a Cath Kidston mug and am really happy with how well they match.

Well it looks like my shopping is following a theme at the moment with another 'as seen on tv' purchase!!! The 'horsey' one and I purchased Zumba last week and I think this weekend will be time the plastic is removed and we have some fun!!!! It is intended to help us keep fit (or in my case get fit) but I am not convinced...... one thing is for sure - you will not be seeing a video of me 'joining the party'!!!!!

Summer holiday!

SH, the 'horsey one', Mum and I headed off on our 'mini' holiday on Sunday. We are short staffed at work again at the moment so my holidays were all cancelled except for 3 days this week. We made our way to Melbourne and started our break with afternoon tea at San Churros in Lygon st with our special friends and my 2 beautiful goddaughters. It was delicious and I realised afterwards that I was in such a hurry to enjoy the Churros (with melted chocolate, caramel and cream) that I didn't get any photos!!! Sadie slept most of the time but woke up in time to enjoy hers! Certainly takes after her godmother!! Bianca adores the 'horsey' one and would like braces just like her!!!

Monday and Tuesday were spent at the Australian Open tennis tournament. They were the first 2 days of the tournament which is our favorite time to go when everyone is still in the draw. On Monday we had tickets for the main arena 'Rod Laver' , our seats were in the shade and we were lucky enough to see Bernard Tomics 4 hour match followed by Kim Clijsters, one of our favorites. It was a great day of great tennis. We ate in Chinatown in the city before making our way back to the hotel.

Tuesday we only had ground passes, we spent most of the morning looking at all the sponsors displays, collecting a few freebies, and having fun. We then watched a few matches with

Australians on the Margaret Court arena. It was HOT!!!!! Luckily with hats, sunscreen and plenty of water we were still able to enjoy the day.

It would not be a post without a token 'food' photo, this is a danish I enjoyed one morning at the hotel - yum!

We were lucky enough on Tuesday to see Mark Beretta interview Pat Cash. As a teenager the highlight of my trip to the Australian Open (when it was still at Kooyong) was to see the young Pat Cash!!!

Although Mum watches the tennis every year on tv this is the first time she has seen it live.
The tickets were her Christmas present and I think they were a success!!! She loved it.

Other highlights of our few days away were the lamb risotto I had at an Italian restaurant in Southbank and our trip to Costco before coming home on Wednesday.

Back to work today and the real world!!!

Well my family were horrified

a) when I took this photo and

b) when they realised I intended blogging it!

Apparently it is weird, inappropriate and just downright wrong and they want to make sure you know they told me that and I went ahead and did it! Well it might not be what you would normally post but I have never pretended to be normal!!

Yesterday (before things went pear shaped) we headed off to Ballarat, Mum, the 'horsey' one and myself for an orthodontist appointment for the 'horsey' one. While there we had a visit to Officeworks to get all the stationary required for year 12 - a lot!!! Gosh that store is so much fun!! and they have so many cool things there ( now it sounds like I don't get out much!)....anyway then we flew into Big W (one of my other favorite stores!) where I was able to make this purchase! An ahh bra - as advertised on tv!!! A friend of mine , not the sort that would either buy from tv or visit a store like Big W was home sick last year and purchased not 1, not 2 but 3 of these bras over the phone and says she has never worn anything more comfortable in her life! As she is also the one to recommend Victoria Secrets to me when we visited the States I tend to take her advice very seriously. When I heard they were now available instore I had to try one. Stay tuned for the review after this week....................

Further to HS , back to the Dr this morning and he has shattered his middle knuckle on his right hand. Best case scenario he is not returning to work from holidays on Monday as planned and will wear the plaster put on for 2 weeks , worst case the orthopedic surgeon which the Dr will consult on Monday will want to see him or do something with it. This would in fact be the same surgeon that we became familiar with back in August and as nice as he is I would be happy not to make his acquaintance again!!!!

I started today heading in a certain direction with a list and plans and ended it somewhere else altogether!!! This may or may not have involved a Dr visit, an xray and a return Dr visit tomorrow morning for HS and his right hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perfect timing to have a parcel waiting for me , a fat 8th pack and a charm square pack of Blueberry Crumb purchased on the 31st December last year so it didn't have to go into this years budget!!!! This range 'spoke' to me and I just had to have some. It is as nice as I thought and I can't wait to start playing with it!

Yay, blogger is working tonight and you finally get to see the best Moroccan carrot dip!!! (I didn't even do anything to make it work, it just did it!!) My s-i-l made this on Christmas day and we were desperate to get the recipe, when we did we made it the very same day. So easy but so yummy! We also made our own flatbreads and then lamb koftas, all 3 together were the perfect combination. Delicious!!!

Moroccan Carrot Dip

4 medium carrots chopped coarsley

2 peeled cloves garlic

1 tsp ground cumin (or moroccan spice)

1 tblsp honey

2 tblsp lemon juice

1/4 cup greek yoghurt

Boil carrots and garlic until soft then blend with all ingrediants.

Assistance required!

Help! Blogger has once again changed something! I have just tried to load photos (yummy food ones) and I can't work out how to do it! The browse bar that came up when you clicked on insert has gone! I usually use that to bring up the photos on my card reader I have plugged into the computer. Does any of that make sense and can anyone tell me (in very simple terms) how to get around it or you may never ever see the most amazing delicious moroccan carrot dip!!!

Just where do I start with choosing projects from this book 'Some kind of wonderful' by Anni Downs from Hatched and Patched???? I have nearly all of Anni's books but this is my favorite so far. It arrived just before Christmas so it was the New Year before I sat down with a quiet moment to have a look. No wonder so many people are doing the stitch a long! It is gorgeous. I have started something, just a small project - the coin purse, there are so many friends this would be perfect for! I already have a list though of the next things on my 'to do ' list!!! I can highly recommend it even if you only use it as a 'dreaming' book!

Last year I spoke about the cookbook our schools parents & friends association were creating. If you remember I submitted some favorite recipes of ours and subsequently had to 'make' them for the 'photo shoot'! It is a very professionally done book, all the recipes were tested to make sure they worked (not just once) and we had a food stylist and a food photographer who gave up 2 days to style and photograph the book. The completed book arrived in November and I am thrilled with it. I could not share it sooner as I had a box of them for Christmas presents and I was scared someone might snoop on here!! It is really a coffee table book while containing an assortment of interesting recipes, some for old favorites, others that I would never try and a lot that I can't wait to make myself. I have only made one so far, vanilla muffins, but they were delicious and got the stamp of approval from the family! It is not a cheap book but reasonably priced for the quality. The school community have supported it well and the majority of the books sold before Christmas.

The funniest story and proof of it being such a small world. I bought a copy for my sister and paid a small fortune to Australia Post to send it to her in the UK for Christmas. When I spoke to her Christmas night she had received 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! copies of it!!!!!!!!! The second one (which she opened first) was from a colleague of hers who is also originally from Australia and it was not until she opened mine that she realised the significance. To be honest I was a little put out and perplexed however over the next few days we unravelled the story and this colleagues nephew attends the same school as mine and had stopped with his Aunt in the UK on the way to Germany the week before Christmas, delivering some cookbooks. We have had a great laugh about it and doesn't it prove what a small world it is!!! The colleague had NO idea of the link to the school but just thought it would be nice for my sister to have an Australian cookbook!

I have had an afternoon home alone today as the rest of the family are in Mt Gambier at the baseball. No room in the car for me so what a shame I had to stay home and potter!! There has been sewing. This is the first completed block of the Fat Quarter shop mystery bom. Only 5 more to catch up!!!

I also did some other sewing which I am bursting to share but it is a little secret for the minute! All I can say is that I haven't had this much fun for a long time!!!

A labor of love.....

I have spent the last hour or so completing a labor of love for the 'horsey' one. This morning when I picked her up after riding Henry I was informed that he had destroyed his cotton rug overnight and we would need to fix it!!!! What a challenge! I pulled out the cheap machine bought specifically for this purpose (but hardly used) and set to task. I had to patch and reinforce and finish off with hand sewing. It is done, she is happy but I hope it is a while before I have to repeat the experience. At one stage I asked whether we could just buy a new rug!!! I put it in the same category as covering school books!!!!!! Do you think I am in line for 'Mother of the year'????????????????????????

The craft project I worked on today is a Nursery Rhyme applique quilt. It has sat there so long that the visofix had separated!!! A trip down the street for more kept me going. Shame I didn't buy as much as I needed!!!

While getting a few things out of my loosely termed 'craft' area I found a few things that caused me a little concern. I found a cardboard box that when I opened up had a whole lot of patterns and fabrics in it that I had forgotten all about! There was the fat quarter set of Prairie Paisley (take 1) and surprise surprise some yardage in it as well which I had no idea at all that I had. I had actually planned to get some yardage of Prairie Paisley 2 to be able to begin a project this year!! No need now!

I also found this basket with lots of rural jardin charm squares cut into all different size and shapes. I vaguely remember cutting to try a pattern but as to what or where I would find it???? I think I will just sew them together into a table runner or blocks to put into some project.

This has proved I really need to get some order happening this year, lucky the mojo has returned!

A finish!

I had a finish yesterday although a little one!! Early last year I printed out a tutorial for these bracelets on Clares place blog,( bracelet tutorial ), (finally getting the hang of links - about time!!!). I bought what I needed to make them at the same time but it has taken me until now to have a go. They are simple wooden bead bracelets with ribbon. I am really happy with the result and will definately be making them again (maybe as the presents for the year 12 boarders?). The little one with the left over beads will be for Bianca my goddaughter!

A new tool!

Now that my sewing mojo is on its way back I have 'acquired' a few new tools to make life easier. I ordered a set of these Frixion marking pens (from The Thrifty Needle - great service, refunded my half of the postage cost) for Mum as part of her Christmas present. She had a friend bring her back one from the US earlier in the year and she had not stopped raving about how wonderful it was. We had not seen them here in Australia , although we hadn't really searched, so when they were advertised in an email from The Thrifty Needle I quickly ordered them. Of course if you are going to order one set you may as well order two!!! They are a smooth writing gel ink pen with a fine point which erase from fabric by ironing. I bought a set of blue, black and red. I used one for the first time last night and found it great to trace with. I haven't tested the removal of it yet but Mum assures me I will be happy with the result.
Has anyone else used these? and were you happy with them? and does anyone know where they are available to purchase in Australia?

Baking and the first 7 projects!

Well I have tried my new recipe for this week. Yesterday I made a Banana Caramel Loaf. It is SO good!!! and so easy. It is mixed by hand and although the icing looks a little complicated it isn't and is worth making to finish the cake perfectly.
I have also completed the list for my first 7 'craft' projects to work on. As I finish one I can replace it with another, I have so many things on my list to either finish or that I'd like to do.
- crochet rug (this will be ongoing for a while)
- coin purse from Some Kind of Wonderful book ( a new project!!)
- beaded and ribbon bracelet (a new project but a very quick one, have had the tutorial printed for at least 12 months!)
- mug rug ( a new project but one that has been promised for many months!)
- golf quilt (a very old project that I will be happy to finish)
- nursery rhyme quilt (also a very old project that I will need to reaquaint myself with!)
- fat quarter shop mystery bom (well behind with this one, will take a while to catch up!!! looking forward to working on this one)
So there you have it, I will see how I go!
Hot and sticky here today, we are hiding inside and it is just now becoming uncomfortable. It is days like this we wish we had air conditioning!!! All of us home again! We had a flying trip to Ararat yesterday to take Mum out for lunch for New Year, only SH and I, the kids were still celebrating the New Year with friends!Back to work tomorrow! Not looking forward to that!

BANANA CARAMEL LOAF
2 cups Self Raising flour
1/2 tsp bicarb of soda
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large ripe bananas mashed (you need 1 cup)
Caramel Icing-
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
50g butter chopped
2 tbsp milk
1/2 cup icing sugar mixture

Preheat oven to 170C/150C fan forced. Lightly grease a 6cm deep, 10 x 20cm loaf pan.(our loaf pan is small which is why I used a square pan). Line base and sides with baking paper.
Sift flour and bicarb of soda into a bowl. Add sugar. Stir to combine. Place milk, eggs and vanilla in a jug. Whisk to combine.
Fold milk mixture and banana into flour mixture. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour - 1 hour 15min or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Stand in pan for 10 minutes. Turn out onto wire rack to cool.
To make icing, place brown sugar, butter and milk in a saucepan over low heat. Cook stirring for 2 minutes (don't boil) or until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to medium. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low, cook for 2-3 minutes or until slightly thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in icing sugar until smooth. Cool for 10 minutes. Spread loaf with icing.
ENJOY!!!

Welcome to 2012!

Well the New Year has arrived and with it many hopes, dreams and plans for myself and my family.

We let it sneak in last night, SH and I were in bed by 10.30 and HS and the 'horsey' one were at different beach side resorts with friends seeing in the New Year. We were woken by unscheduled fireworks at 12.10 and again 12.30, as Jimmy HATES them , we were not happy!!!! Poor boy, he is reacting worse rather than better, means we can not leave him alone on any nights there is a chance they will happen.

I have made many resolutions, I always do. Whether I stay true to them all year or not they give me a beginning for how I want to live my year and if they make just the little bit of difference I think they are worthwhile!

Okay so in no particular order!

I will try not to procrastinate!!!!!!

I will be kind to myself.

I will enjoy my family and friends.

I will be happy!

I will take more photos and record our lives for the future.

I will continue to make 'lists' - not something I could give up if I tried!!

I will declutter my home.................

I will send a piece of snail mail each and every day.

I will try a new recipe each week.

I will walk daily and try to live a healthier lifestyle.

I will attend to my health.

I will craft daily (the plan is to work on 7 projects at a time, one each day of the week)

I wil read more.

I will work to a budget.

I will along with SH set goals, financial, life, home and holiday, short term and long term.

I will live dangerously!!! (SH is concerned with this one, I am not really sure what I mean!)

I will catch up with friends and family as the opportunity arises, I will not put off for another day, I will make an effort, life is short , we are never sure what is around the corner.

I will pay compliments and reward good service.

I will meet blogger friends 'in real life' and enjoy spending time with them.

Once again - I will enjoy my family and help make their dreams come true and spend as much time with them as is possible while still letting them live and find their way in the world, I will encourage and support them and share their interests.

I pray that family rifts heal, that habits are able to be broken and that all my family and friends enjoy a year filled with health, happiness, joy, laughter and generosity xxxxxxx

I have always admired and been envious of Jim Shore figurines particularly the Christmas ones. This year I began my collection with my first purchase all because of http://grannyloz.blogspot.com/ . When Loz said she had done a little internet shopping and bought a few more to add to her collection and was then willing to share where from I lost all self control and had to put my own order in!!!! It is only a small Santa but he has given me so much pleasure already this festive season and I can't wait to add to the collection next year!!! Thanks Loz!

Christmas 2011

Before the New Year begins I thought I better do my Christmas 2011 post! It is very photo heavy but each and every photo hold wonderful memories. They are in no particular order!!!! but just random!

We had lunch with my Mum in Ararat on Christmas Eve - prawns, roast pork and the pav I made. Yum! Lots of presents and the yearly trip to the cemetery with roses from our garden.

Off to Barwon Heads for lunch on Christmas Day at SH's sister's home with all of his side of the family. Our contribution for lunch was turkey, raspberry and spinach salad and a mango cheesecake! Another fun day with presents and a lot of laughs!

I was going to post photos today of our Christmas celebrations but they will have to wait for another day!!

I tend to find this week between Christmas and New Year (when our office is closed so I am on holidays) one filled with the 2 extremes. I spend a lot of it being very lazy, napping, reading and wasting a lot of time on the computer or catching up with dvds. On the other hand I get all inspired for the new year , making lists and plans of how I will have a clean,tidy house at all times, get healthy and thin, eat better and cook more and of course take time to smell the roses and craft more!!! While I am in this planning mode I tend to get stuck into some tidying, cleaning and sorting at home. We cleaned the fridge out this morning, I know it isn't something I should be so excited about but I am!!! Not just a wipe out or a quick glance at what was past it's best but a take everything out and scrub kind of clean!!! I can't stop looking at it now..... Sad I know!

The other thing we achieved today is something that has been on the list for a while. I have been looking out for a bookcase to fit this little wall near the kitchen. It is quite a narrow space. Today I decided I couldn't wait any longer for the perfect bookcase so I bought a 'cheap' (some assembly required) bookcase. Darling SH put it together for me not without a few problems caused by the assistant and yes that may of been me!!! I have now put all my cookbooks into it. They were on the main bookcase, hard to get to and taking up so much space. Here they are handy and close to the kitchen and all together, no longer will I have to spend a lot of time searching!!! I am really happy with the result. Now to attack the pantry tomorrow!!!

I can still not believe how spoilt I was at Christmas and what perfect presents I received!

From HS I got an icecream maker and even better it is a lovely bright green!! I had dropped many hints but had no expectation that I would actually receive it. I am about to go and make my first batch - strawberry!!

From Mum I got a new coffee machine. It has a timer!!! which I managed to set (don't forget I am technologically challenged) last night so this morning I woke to the smell of freshly brewed coffee! SH will love this as he usually gets up to make my first coffee for the day, it will give him an extra sleep in!

The 'horsey' one knew how much I really wanted to see Red Dog when it was on at the theatre and how disappointed I was when I missed it so I got the DVD from her. I can't wait to sit down and watch it!

SH gave me the biggest surprise, a pandora bracelet with a cat and heart charm. I love it so much!!

The other present I love is Adriano Zumbo's book which I got from my brother & sister in law.

All in all I feel so blessed and spoilt, I couldn't be happier!

SSCS 2011 - what I sent!

I thought I better share what I sent in the SSCS this year. I sent to Marica in Sweden. I sent here this sewing bag that I am very proud of with the scallops and embroidery. I also sent her some Christmas Australian animal fat quarters, some caramello koalas , a stitchery pattern and 2 felt ornaments.

Now to plan for next year!!!! I say this every year but I really must do it!

SSCS 2011

The only swap I have taken part in this year is Chookyblues SSCS. This is my 3rd year (maybe 4th?) taking part and once again I have been blown away my the talent and generosity of bloggers. My partner that I received from this year was Shauna from www.hobbieswithalittlebiteoflife.blogspot.com from Canada. I did not know her before but have certainly made a new blogging friend.

I received a beautiful quilted table topper, I will get so much enjoyment using it both during the festive season and during the year. It is gorgeous and I have the perfect place for it.

I also got 2 knitted dishcloths, hard to see in the photo but a beautiful yarn, red,white and gold.

I also got a lovely bread board with a recipe for Friendship on it. I will enjoy using it and remembering my special blogging friends while doing so.

I knew Shauna did some digital scrapbooking but wow she is clever!!! I received a 'favorite recipe' book to keep all my 'special' recipes in. It is personalised for me and the first recipe in there is very special as it is Shauna's favorite family recipe. I can't wait to try it. 'Chocolate chippers' - sure it will go down a treat in our home!!!

Christmas is here!!!! and I made it! The Christmas letter and cards were written today and posted, the groceries are done and the shopping finished! Presents not wrapped yet but that will happen....
We had our first Christmas celebration tonight, dinner with friends. I made a Christmas log for dessert, very happy with how it turned out and judging by the little bit left I would say it was a success!

Well I am now on holidays for the next 11 days , hurray!!!!! I am so happy!!!! Now to get the lists made tonight so I can hit tomorrow running and do the final preparations for Christmas..... SH is not working either so we are planning to be organised by 2pm to then relax and enjoy the next three days. We are having dinner with friends tomorrow night so a dessert and salad need to be made, still not sure what but maybe a mango cheesecake??? There was a farewell morning tea at work today so I made some Christmas cupcakes, I got the recipe from Lisa and Sarah at a 'Spoonful of sugar' blog. They are so nice!!! I didn't ice them but dusted them with icing sugar, full of spice and flavor. Almost left it too long to get a photo!!!

The 'horsey' one had an orthodontist appointment early this morning in Ballarat so we hit the road at the crack of dawn picking up Mum on the way! Once the appointment was over we shopped till we dropped!!! Every so often someone would be sent in the opposite direction so something could be secretly bought and squirreled into the car. I think it's done now!!! I have unpacked the car and it is safely in the spare room or should I say Santa's cave, anyone enters and they will be very very sorry!!!

Over 12 months ago I saw on a blog some 'cookie' molds, they were so beautiful it was hard to believe they were edible or achievable. Of course I had to have one and give it a go, I could imagine adding to the collection each year and giving them as gifts beautifully presented! By the time I hopped on the website last year international orders were closed for the year so onto this years list it went. I just made the order in time this year, the last day for shipping, one day I promise I'll be organised!!! It was so hard to choose which mold to order. It arrived and we were both thrilled and daunted by it. It is a wooden carved mold. It came with a recipe book with lots and lots of tips and instructions. I had thought I would use it for shortbread but Connie suggested that the best effect would be with 'Springerle' cookies. We (being SH and I) read the book back to front ,looked at each other and swallowed hard!!! so we hopped on the website and watched the instruction video and decided to just go for it!! So far we are happy with the results, the cookies dry for up to 24 hours before you bake them, this helps to keep the image preserved. Once they are baked I am hoping I can give them for presents and that it will become a Christmas tradition.

Poor Jimmy has had a bad week, he has 'allegedly' escaped from our yard (a problem we are struggling with at the moment) and chased the postie!!!!!!!!!!! Yikes , wrong time of year to do that. Wonder if thats why my internet shopping parcels haven't arrived yet?? A phone call with the ranger and all round a traumatic week for Jimmy and his family. To top it off we have thunder rumbling at the moment and Jimmy 'hates' storms!!!

Yikes Day 16 means time is running out, so much to do so little time! Some serious list making needs to happen in the morning.
I shared in such a special day today but forgot the camera! One of my colleagues at work (and a friend) is leaving to work and live in Melbourne. She is a single Mum to Baxter who is 7. He has been going to the catholic primary school here in town and today he was baptised. None of his family is Catholic or in fact regularly goes to church but he has enjoyed learning at school and made this decision with the support of his Mum. She invited the 'horsey' one and I to go along to the Mass (the horsey one has babysat him many times). It was lovely. Father Tim and Sister Marg along with teachers from the school and his class mates made it such a special experience. It was very interactive with a lot of teaching and explaining to the children what was happening and for what reason. We feel very privileged to have shared this experience with Kylie and Baxter especially at this time of year amongst the hustle and bustle of the 'silly season' when we sometimes forget the real reason for the season. I had a warm and fuzzy feeling all day.

I'm running out of steam! I've been out most nights this week, out for breakfast, working and feverishly trying to get parcels in the mail. All of this means too many late nights and early mornings! No work now until Tuesday so a busy day of appointments tomorrow but then the weekend I should be able to get the cards written to be posted on Monday. I collect a new piece of Christmas china every year. No particular pattern or set but just something that takes my fancy!! This is what I chose this year, I have already used it a few times and love it.
I have had my Christmas haircut and color this afternoon, the greys are gone and I am ready to embrace the 'silly season' with gusto!!!

Well it was an early morning as I needed to take a plate to work (not like me to leave things until the last minute!!) and I wanted to try a new recipe , one that I actually had out last Christmas and didn't get as far as making. 'Chocolate Candy Cane Cookies' - a Donna Hay recipe. Quite simple, decadent and delicious but poor SH innocently agreed to prepare the candy canes for me......mmmm that was a mistake! If we make them again I will be bribing a child to unwrap them and chop them the night before!!!
Last night I did something I had sworn never ever to do but in a moment of weakness gave in - joined facebook!!!! I find it hard to find time for blogging at times so I really wonder how I will find time for this,that is if I ever understand it, but I am so looking forward to using it to keep in touch with 2 special friends in WA.
Sad for me to say but the sweetened cream is winning in popularity!!!!

CHOCOLATE CANDY CANE COOKIES
110g butter, softened and chopped
1 cup (175g) brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup (150g) plain (all purpose) flour, sifted
1/4 cup cocoa sifted
1/2 tsp bicarb of (baking) soda
120g dark chocolate, melted
280g dark chocolate extra chopped
120g candy canes, chopped
Preheat oven 160 degrees C(320F). Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat for 8-10 minutes or until light and creamy. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until well combined. Add the flour, cocoa, bicarb of soda and melted chocolate and beat until just combined. Fold through the extra chopped chocolate. Roll tablespoons of the mixture into rounds. Place on baking trays lined with non stick baking paper allowing room for the cookies to spread and flatten slightly. Press the chopped candy canes into the tops of the cookies and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are firm. Allow to cool on the trays. Makes approx 20.

No photos today! Sorry! but I do have an ongoing debate in our household that I'd like some outside input on, nothing of national importance but still............. This morning we had hot scones for morning tea with jam and cream, SH prepared it and it was amazing except for one thing - he sweetened the cream with vanilla and sugar, not how I like it at all, I prefer it whipped with no additives.
So tell me - sweetened or not when it comes to cream?????
Otherwise an at home day, another batch of shortbread, some red velvet cupcakes, and a lot of other things ticked off the 'to do' list! Hope everyone else had a great day!

Today I had my quilting group Christmas lunch. It was lovely. It is such a lovely group of women and as you can imagine we are never lost for words!

We always have a kris kringle and as usual the presents were great. It was lots of fun opening them and guessing who had given it!

Ann made this gorgeous Christmas tree hanging which Janine was lucky enough to get. She does beautiful work.

This was a soap that Helen received from Kerryn. It smelt beautiful and is so so pretty. None of us were sure if we could actually use it!

This is the present I received. A tea towel with Rudolph appliqued on from Jane and a 'Quilt Squad' notepad. I am thrilled with my gift.

I forgot to show this decoration that Mum brought over for me on Thursday. For Christmas last year we gave her the ornament club run by Shabby Fabrics. She has kept the original set for herself but made me one for my tree. There is so much work in it.

Day 10 - a good friends birthday and a day spent with friends! Christmas preparation will wait for tomorrow!!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas here now! Mum brought me down this wreath for my front door and it's really made our home a lot more festive. On top of that Santa managed quite a bit of shopping today ! I also hit a few online stores which should still have time to get here and got parcels posted to two very special friends!!

School holidays have begun today so both the 'horsey' one and myself are very happy!!!! 7 weeks of no uniforms to iron and no lunches to make!

Poor Pete, it's hard work being a Christmas cat!!!

Day 8 and I have had a lovely day. I finished work at lunchtime and rushed home because Mum was coming. When she arrived we went out for lunch and then did a little bit of shopping! At our favorite homewares shop we made a purchase for the Christmas table, an old fashioned sweet jar. I just happened to have a tub of Christmas m & m's and a huge bag of Hershey kisses in Christmas colors waiting for a home. They look great but I guess I can't get upset when they are sampled!!!! We also went to the local store that sells sewing machines, Mum is in the market for a new one, unfortunately we were a nuisance to the salesperson and didn't have much pleasure. She didn't seem to know what we were looking at and couldn't understand that we didn't want the top of the range machine! Anyone got any recommendations?? Mum wants a new machine with a good straight stitch and that she can free machine quilt with.
Better go, we have the school Christmas service tonight (the reason Mum is here).......

AQM and day 7!

A fortnight ago Mum and I were lucky enough to spend the weekend at the Australian Quilt Market (a trade show in Melbourne) with my friends Robyn and Rex who have the business Orange Daisy (www.orangedaisy.com.au)

It was inspiring to see some of the patterns and fabric out there in the market, so many nice new things, my head was swiveling from side to side trying to take it all in.

I thought the Orange Daisy stand looked great. It is a few years since they have been to a market.

I picked up some fabric, felt from Hatched and Patched, 'A walk in the woods' layer cakes, some charm squares, jelly rolls and tone on tone packs. A few other things I can't show here!!!

I was so excited to pick up all 5 issues of Vignette magazine. I also picked up some Rosalie Quinlan books, some Hatched and Patched patterns and notebooks , new scissors and my Homespun diary for 2012!!!

We saw a lot of people there, lovely to catch up with Annie and Pete from Hatched and Patched, Lynette Anderson and Vince, Brenda Ryan and Leo and Pam and Katie from Cottage Garden threads.

Day 7 - yikes, I delivered 2 gifts today as well as got the shortbread and rocky road to the morning tea at work. Still so much to do, better get to it!!!

Recipes and Day 5

As often happens at this time of year we seem to have been 'cooking up a storm'!!!! I thought I'd share a few recipes in case anyone else wants some inspiration. Tonight the plan is to make the first batch of shortbread for this festive season and some rocky road.

This morning we made Banana Muffins with peanut butter cream cheese icing- Yum!!!

On Saturday night we took a chocolate Tiramisu dessert out for dinner - Easy and Yum!

Day 5 and we received our first Christmas card in the mail......oops I better get going!

BANANA MUFFINS WITH PEANUT BUTTER ICING
375g SR flour (2 1/2 cups)
1/2 tsp baking powder
200g dark brown sugar (1 cup firmly packed)
2 eggs
400g mashed banana
2 tsp finely grated lemon rind
2 tbs fresh lemon juice
200ml canola oil
125ml milk (1/2 cup)
250g cream cheese (spreadable)
2 tbsp smooth peanut butter
45g pure icing sugar (1/4 cup)
dried banana chips to decorate (we didn't have these but I will get them next time)
Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Stir in the sugar. Make a well in the centre. Add the egg, banana, lemon rind, lemon juice, oil and milk. Stir until just combined. Divide the mixture into muffin cases. Bake for 20 mins or until golden.
Use an electric beater to beat the cream cheese, peanut butter and icing sugar in a bowl for 4 minutes or until pale and creamy. Spread icing over muffins and top with banana chips.

CHOCOLATE TIRAMISU
3/4 cup espresso or strong plunger coffee
2/3 cup Marsala ( I used Kahlua but think Baileys would be nice too)
250g packet Italian sponge finger biscuits
75g dark chocolate , coarsely grated
300ml thickened cream
1/4 cup icing sugar , sifted
2 cups (500g) mascarpone cheese
1 tblsp Marsala extra
Grated chocolate to garnish
Combine coffee and 2/3 cup Marsala and cool. Dip both sides of half the biscuits in coffee mixture.
Line an 8 cup dish or loaf pan with baking paper and foil. (I used a glass bowl and just adjusted the layers accordingly, I didn't line it and served it in it).
Place soaked biscuits in a single layer over base of dish. Sprinkle generously with half the grated chocolate.
Beat the cream and icicng sugar in a bowl until soft peaks form. Fold in mascarpone and one tablespoon of Marsala. Spread half the cream mixture over biscuits in dish. Dip remaining biscuits in coffee mixture, place over cream layer. Top biscuits with remaining grated chocolate and remaining cream mixture.
Cover, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Decorate with grated chocolate before serving.

Irish birds and Day 4

Mum has recently finished a quilt which has been a long term project. It is a Lynette Anderson pattern 'Irish Birds'. Mum made it from Rural Jardin fabric and made it for herself, something that doesn't happen very often! It is absolutely beautiful and the quilting is amazing. She had it quilted by Clever Ducks Quilting in Colac. She was thrilled to be able to show it to Lynette last weekend at the AQM in Melbourne.

Day 4 ................ I have the new Christmas CD playing ............I got 30 lolly bags made for our Christmas break up for Pony Club today along with a Chocolate ripple cake and a chocolate brownie...........as for cards, Christmas letter and parcels there has been no movement today! Time for another Advent chocolate!

SSCS11 parcel arrives and Day 3

I could not believe my eyes when my SSCS parcel arrived in the mail on Thursday. What a speedy trip it had from Canada and Shauna. I was very good and opened it today and although all the parcels looked very tempting I only opened the ornament. How cute is it?? Not the best photo but a gorgeous frame with snowmen inside. It is hanging on my tree already and I am getting so much pleasure from it.

Day 3 and not much achieved, mmm lets hope Day 4 is better!!!!

Out for dinner now, have made a chocolate tiramasu to take and a spinach,feta and raspberry salad....Yum!

Furry visitors and Day 2

Well Day 2 and 2 parcels posted today - one to my sister in the UK so a major tick off my list!!!

We had 2 very special visitors to our home this week. I had a knock on the door from a lady to tell me I had a Mummy and baby koala up my gum tree in the front yard. She had seen it on the road and followed it to protect it. It had come in our yard and headed up to our front door first before finding our tree and spending the rest of the day there. They moved on in the darkness of night as is their usual habit. It is unusual for us to see a koala in town but we loved having them. I did waste quite a bit of time watching them especially the baby who was mischievious, he kept climbing higher away from Mum reaching out for leaves and then rushing back when he realised he was on very fragile branches!! I think she was very relieved when he finally settled in for a siesta.

An Open Garden.

The Parents & Friends Association for our school hosted an Open Garden today. A very generous school family opened their garden to all. It is a beautiful garden on a country property. The roses were stunning. After wandering around the garden we enjoyed a coffee and cupcake while browsing among nursery stalls. Our only purchase was a box of strawberry plants which will hopefully thrive and give us some lovely fruit. Luckily although it threatened all day the rain stayed away!

Where has the nice weather gone?????? 30 degrees yesterday and thunderstorms and dreary grey rain all day today! Had the day in Ballarat with friends having a pre Christmas lunch at the Boatshed around Lake Wendouree. Luckily we didn't draw breath and look at the view because it was fairly ordinary today!!! Still one of my favorite places though and a lovely lunch.

Parcel No. 2 - Well Christmas came early in our house this week! I won a giveaway on Retromummy's blog a few weeks ago. She had done a test drive of an electric car with Mazda which was really interesting and had a gift basket to give away as a bonus! I had actually forgotten about it so it was a lovely surprise when it arrived. The smells coming from the parcel before I even got into it were gorgeous. It was packed by '3hungrymonkeys' and was full of organic and Australian products. There was Olive oil, shortbread, chocolate, teas, soaps, scrubs and more. I am going to get so much pleasure from it. Thank you so much Retromummy for hosting the giveaway.

Parcel No.1

Well as the title suggests I have received more than 1 parcel this week. This was the first, I finally got a book printed of my blog and couldn't be happier with the finished result.It was my Birthday a few weeks ago and this was my present from Mum. Not sure that anyone other than me will ever look at it but I can just imagine myself in the nursing home in my 90's looking back on yesteryear! 2009,2010 and this year still to go!!!

I may of mentioned once or twice before that I have a weakness for magazines!! I have been doing much better and not buying anywhere near as many as I was. This time of year is my weakness though, they are full of ideas for Christmas menus and decorating, gifts and craft! I picked up this Family Circle last week and have it handy as a reference. I just may of picked up the Delicious magazine as well and have 'grand' plans of recreating the 'Mango meringue' cake on the cover along with the 'peanut butter cups'. I may even of picked up in the last day or so the 'Good Taste' with an amazing looking Chocolate cherry mud cake on the cover and the Super Food Ideas................................................ I wonder what I will put on the menu this year or will it be the tried and true recipes that come out each year???

On another matter I had a 'hacker' write a guest blog yesterday, yes I do love you darling girl but just remember 'payback' is sweet!!!!!!

The 'horsey one' or should I say 'hacker' loved every single comment she received, I think this may not be an isolated incident!!!!

First thing first I think I should point out that this is the horsey one not the chocolate cat here. Can't believe Mum left me unsupervised with her blog logged in haha!! I've never quite been sure of the happenings in blog land..it kind of freaks me out telling the world about our daily lives and meeting up with supposed "quilter friends" who mum has never even met and inviting them to our house!! Seriously mum they could be some serial killer not some old knitting granny!! I think i'll just stick to facebook from now on! I guess i better get back to my VCE exam study, my exams tomorrow :( and also before mum realises i'm still on here! sorry mum hahaa. Farewell....

The weekend before last was a hard one. We had to say goodbye to the 'horsey one's' first pony. We were lucky enough that when we arrived here in town and started at a school offering horsemanship to meet an amazing family who have not only passed on their amazing equine knowledge but have become real friends. The 'horsey' one rode their pony 'Show Off' for her first few years of riding and they were a true partnership. They both loved speed and jumping!!! As it happens the 'horsey one' grew and moved onto her next pony but Show Off was retired with her friend Moose. Henry is agisted at the same property so we still saw her daily. She had aged and it was her time. The 'horsey one' and I went to say goodbye the night before and spent some time with her , grooming her and cuddling her. We took so many photos and shed some tears as well. We will never forget her and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.....

Today my dear friend Lorraine is burying her brother Keith , he died on the same weekend in a car accident in WA leaving behind a wife and 3 small children, the youngest only a few months old. I will be thinking of her today and wishing I was close enough to be there to support her.

Although we don't celebrate Halloween widely here in Australia I always buy a bowl of sweets 'just in case' someone comes 'trick n treating'. They came the year before last and I had nothing in the house to give them so I try to be prepared now!

On our trip to the US 2 years ago ( I can't believe it was that long ago already) we loved all the Halloween decorations everywhere especially at Disneyland. These photos are just an example of how beautifully it was decorated.

One of the highlights of our trip (please don't laugh!!) was a trip to a local Walmart. The kids were thrilled to see the aisles and aisles of Halloween costumes and sweets. They just may of tried a few for size!!! We are still regretting not bringing that Whoopie cushion costume home!!!

Poor Fred!
Not only does he need to suffer the humiliation of having 'this' photo posted again but he is sporting a 'not so fluffy' tail after last night jumping onto the kitchen bench, going just a little too close to the cooktop and setting his tail on fire!!!! I kid you not! Luckily it looked worse than it was and he actually didn't burn himself but his pride is hurt and the smell of singed fur was not pleasant!

There has been some talk in blogland about how blogs are named and I am a little bit late jumping on the wagon but thought I'd share anyway.
It is pretty simple - I love cats and chocolate so simply combined 2 of my favorite things! A home is not a home without a cat and there is the worry that in my latter years I may end up as a 'crazy cat lady'!!! and my day is not complete without chocolate. I have a taste most days and ALWAYS have some in my secret stash - just in case!!!
Anyone else that hasn't told care to let us know how you named your blog??

Some random thoughts..

I have a cold and am feeling miserable so although I really want to keep posting daily (and in theory it becomes a habit) I have no idea what to write about....so I thought I would just ramble a few things that I need to share (and that to be honest no one else really needs to know about!!)

HS is doing well back at work, on full hours but not quite full duties yet. He is going to physio and hand therapy each week and although the therapists thought his progress was slow they are very pleased this week. He is in Melbourne tonight for a heavy metal concert!
Work is not so enjoyable these days but I am sure it will turn around soon, a time of conflict and change - neither that I handle particularly well. Only 4 hours to work tomorrow then it is over until Monday morning again!
The 'horsey' one went back to school after holidays this week. It will be a busy term for her with exams and end of year activities. Leadership positions are announced next week so fingers crossed that she gets the position she would like.
My crochet is growing, I loved working on it in the car on the weekend, the trip went really quickly. SH is getting some more wool for me tomorrow when he is out of town for a meeting. Not so happy about having to visit Spotlight but he will do it for me!!
My mystery BOM has had no more progress but looks at me daily and tempts me! Sunday will be a home day so I have promised it an outing then!
I am slowly making progress with my SSCS but as it is a secret can't say any more than that!!
I have a new recipe for a Honeycomb ice cream cake which I bought the ingredients for a week ago but still haven't made it! Hopefully I will be sharing soon!

Alice in Wonderland...

We had a trip to Melbourne on the weekend to attend a lunch to celebrate my Aunty Judy's 70th Birthday. She wanted the theme of Alice in Wonderland. The cake was AMAZING!!! One larger cake as a teacup and then 69 tiny cupcakes all decorated to go with the theme. They were white chocolate mudcake and not only looked great but tasted good too!! My favorite had to be the red spotted mushrooms and the 'eat me' cakes although every time you looked you saw something extra. The day went as planned and July loved every minute of it celebrating with the family she loves surrounding her!!!

I was lucky enough to win a giveaway from A Spoonful of Sugar recently and so I am going to delve into the world of digital scrapbooking (because I don't have enough to do already!!!). I won a software package from My Memories which was nice and easy to download (actually the 'horsey' one had to do it for me - remember I am technologically challenged!). I did have to put it onto the 'horsey' one's laptop because mine is struggling and I really need to replace it, once I find that money tree of course! I haven't had a decent play with the package yet but plan to use it to create a 2011 memory book for the kids to put in their Christmas stockings and also to begin creating a 'family' recipe book. Whether these things actually happen or not it will be fun playing! Thank you to Lisa and Sarah for hosting the giveaway and to My Memories for the prize. As I learn what I am doing I will share with you!

I started this post with a photo of a box of Lindt Petite Dessert chocolates which I was lucky enough to be given at work today from a Locum physio who has returned home. The photo has disappeared into a black hole. My computer is badly in need of being replaced so I really don't have the energy to load it again with the chance it may disappear once more so please just imagine it!!! I have the new 'blogger' interface on and with it have found a few extra tools such as a choice of fonts so will have fun experimenting and playing for the next few days! I am so proud of myself for posting every day and it is becoming routine now , wish my daily walk would happen like that too! I am finding it difficult some days to think of something to talk about and so I tend to ramble like today, my apologies. I know it is not long since I did a 'I am watching' post but I have gone from watching very little on tv to having a smorgasboard to choose from. Survivor returned last week and the Amazing Race returns this week. Junior Masterchef is on as is X factor and excitingly the Mentalist returns tonight. I do love this show! Does anyone else watch??

This morning I sent SH and the 'horsey' one off to Pony Club determined to actually get some jobs done.

A priority on the list was organising myself for the annual SSCS that Chookyblue hosts. Time management is not my strong point but this year I am determined to be organised. I drew up a chart (hard to see in this photo because of the pretty colored pens I used!!). I have worked out how many weeks I have and what I want to get done each week to stay on task. Let's see how it goes!!!

This year I have signed up for the Fat Quarter Shop's Mystery BOM. I need some practice piecing and this is a great affordable BOM. It is in Strawberry Fields which is a fabric line I really like which makes it even nicer. This last week I received Block 4 which made 4/4 not even started. There are always other things needing my attention but today I decided the world would not end if I sewed for an hour!! I set the timer and off I went. I didn't get the first block finished, I am measuring things 3 times before cutting and taking my time but I am happy with what I have achieved so far! I will make another time for later this week, I had forgotten how good for the soul creating is!

I am on dinner duty tonight so off to try a new recipe, a chicken Paella!

Today is the AFL grand final and we have our fingers and toes crossed that the Cats get up over the Pies. The house is decorated with posters and balloons (skipped the streamers this year because of the rain) and took some lovely photos but without the memory card in the camera so you will just have to believe me! The pies are in the oven (meat pies not Collingwood) and we also all have a Cadbury chocolate football for the afternoon. Note - do not buy them when they first come out at $10 each but wait until Grand final week when they are only $2.50! For once I had a win!! The heater is on and the crochet is waiting.....Jimmy is ready and has been practising his ball skills this morning , he is named after Jimmy Bartel so has quite an interest.
Now for the game.........

Friends bearing plates are always welcome!!! I have a very good friend who is of Greek descent. She makes the most delicious Baklava and always shares it. If she says she is making it we wait by the door for her to drop a plateful in and it is divided evenly just to make sure no one misses out. Although the recipe will be in the school cookbook I think this is one of those recipes that would be hard to measure up to!

What I'm watching!

I really enjoyed my television viewing last night. First up was the Renovators which I have only watched if I happen to see it but enjoyed catching up on who was still in and how their houses were looking. Next the highly anticipated first episode of the season of Junior Masterchef and it didn't disappoint. It was so nice to see the excitement of the kids and the positive way the judges interacted with them .I also picked up some cooking tips which was a bonus!!! Next I turned to the ABC and this will be essential viewing on Sunday evenings now ' The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency'. A drama set in Botswana. I gave Mum the books for her Birthday but have not read them myself. I loved the show, it was different and refreshing.
Did anyone else watch these???? and what did you think??
It will be Junior Masterchef and the Brownlow count (Aussie Rules football best and fairest) tonight!

This is the bread I am lucky enough to enjoy most days. SH bakes it, a Wholewheat Sourdough. Of course we often have the junior members of the family requesting store bought white bread!!! It is delicious and keeps and freezes really well. Certainly helping us as we continue to attempt to live a healthier lifestyle!!

We left home at 7am this morning and got home again at 7pm after the Interschool horse competition that our school ran. The 'horsey' one competed on Henry, their first outing in the last 6 months since he was injured. She has been having weekly lessons and working really hard riding 6 days out of 7. She was rewarded with wonderful success today. 2 Firsts and a Second as well as winner of her age group and then overall winner of the whole competition. She was also a member of the winning team. Along with her big smile she brought home a swag of ribbons and 2 new rugs. Henry got some special treats at dinner time and I think he was smiling almost as much as his mother!!!!

I am on a mission! Our school is hosting a horse competition on Saturday so of course the 'horsey' one is competing but it also means I am helping for the whole day. I also volunteered 3 slices for the canteen. Of course I decided to make some extra so we could benefit at home. On top of this a close family friend has her birthday Saturday so I am planning a Birthday cake for her! Why oh why can't I be that person that buys ready made cakes and slices at the supermarket and is happy to say sorry I can't help, I'm too busy! Oh well, 2 Mars bar slices and a Hedgehog are made and ready to be iced and I've decided to wait until the morning to make the cupcakes, honey joys and lemon slice!!! oh and the Birthday cake.

Well the plaster is gone and so are the stitches!!! The skin is scaly and the arm is stiff and wasted but after xrays and a physio appointment today it is looking good and feeling better already. Another physio appointment booked for next week and he will also start swimming the week after. Best news of all is he can drive again and return to work on Monday on modified duties!!!! Hurray, we survived!!!

The 'horsey' one set off on Geography camp on Sunday morning and returned this afternoon tired, dirty, sandy and excited!!! They went to Wyperfield national park. She claims she had 3 'near death' experiences hence the title of this post!! She was stabbed by a stick which involved a lot of blood, stepped on a stumpy tail lizard (but first thought it was a snake ) and had a falling tree in a storm just miss her!!!! After a game of basketball I am sure she will have no trouble sleeping!!!

Our Podiatrist at work turned 40 last week and thought if she took leave and left the country no one would be any the wiser. Of course we found out so I made her this as a Birthday cake and took it to work today. Luckily I got a piece and it was yummy and it is super easy to make.

My day started early. After spending yesterday running around after the 'horsey' one with a riding lesson, the hockey grand final and the hockey presentation night, I had a long and scary list to get through today!! Managed to get HS out of the house at 8 to go to a motorbike competition with a friend (not riding though!!)and the 'horsey' one out at 9 to go on her Geography camp until Tuesday afternoon. Last one out was HS's friend who had to be at work by midday! SH and I plodded our way through the list helped by the beautiful weather, warm and sunny, it was just glorious and good for the soul!
Apparently I have been promising HS meatloaf for months so today was the day. I used the Pioneer Woman's recipe, really good, covered in bacon and basted in a lovely tomato sauce. I certainly earned some brownie points!!

For dessert I made individual lemon delicious puddings. They are a favorite in our home and they lived up to their name - yum!! Even better there were left overs of both for tomorrows dinner!!!

We have welcomed 3 new girls to our home. They needed a new home so we very gladly said we would have them. It is so nice to once again collect fresh eggs each day and be able to share our vegie scraps! Only 1 has a name so far 'Frankie'!!!

An update on HS and his 'broken' wrist/elbow!!! He is being a surprisingly good patient but is very very bored , sleeping as late as he can each day so there is less time to be awake and bored! Not able to drive or in fact do much at all. Spending most of his time watching movies and spending time on his computer. He is desperate to get back to work. 7 sleeps till the plaster comes off and the stitches out. He then sees the surgeon. Optimistically I have made a physio appointment for the same morning..... figure he has had all his bad luck so should be smooth sailing from now on! He has no idea that he may not be allowed straight back to work but figure if need be next Wed is early enough for him to find out! A fortnight ago he had a follow up with the surgeon and thinking he would get a new plaster he let his sister and girlfriend decorate his plaster, he couldn't see what they were doing so didn't realise there are lots of hearts and little animals!!

Off to try and get a Pony club treasurers report ready for the meeting tomorrow night!! One day I won't leave it till the last minute!

HS and his girlfriend went to a fancy dress 21st the other weekend. Of course it snuck up on them and HS was not organised with a costume. The 'horsey' one and I had a trip to Ballarat to the orthodontist the Friday before so popped into Spotlight and picked up this costume. We also picked up ears for Catwoman!!! I think they looked great and as most people were in costume they didn't look out of place! Expensive yes but worth it -oh yes!!!!

Not happy......my card reader so I can load photos has gone missing again!!!! I am buying a new one this week and you can guarantee the other one will turn up as soon as I do (or be returned if one of my teens has borrowed it!!)

Congratulations to Aussie Sam Stousur winning the US tennis open this morning. She has worked so hard to get to this place and deserves the title. I watched the end of it when I arrived at work this morning, glad she finished it off quickly before our clients interrupted!!!

A new regime in our house this week! A health kick which is very necessary. We are eating better and exercising more. An early morning walk this morning was a good start! We are also trying to become more organised at home, using our time better and decluttering!!! I attacked our walk in robe yesterday which had become a dumping ground for anything and everything. At the end of the day I hadn't finished it but made huge inroads and filled 2 large wheelie bins! Maybe the hoarding gene can be overcome....

This evening the 'horsey one' and I have been to a career information night run by the Victorian Police. She did her work experience last year with the mounted police and loved it. Tonight was great and may of actually given her a bit more insight into her future career path. Added bonus we picked up 2 new drink bottles and pens, both things that often go missing in our home!!!

I meant to say yesterday I have actually picked up an old knitting project in the last few days in the hope of actually making some progress, a little often may work!

Catch up time in our house today..... the sun is shining and the world is good! Amazing how a bit of vitamin d is good for the soul!

Well my problem with blog reading in my last post was all my own doing! I had forgotten that I used google reader now not bloglines ..... think maybe it was a sign I was not well. I felt a little funny in the tummy Wednesday morning, lasted 20 minutes at work and succumbed to a full blown attack of gastro. I didn't get back to work for the rest of the week, not even managing to move anywhere other than my bed and the bathroom until Friday. Luckily I am feeling better now but boy it was not pleasant! To top it off SH was in Melbourne for work.The 'horsey' one was such a help cooking dinner and making school lunches. Not sure whether she got to bed on time or how much homework was done though!
Once I was feeling better SH came down with a miserable cold as did HS. HS also had some type of virus with fevers and aches. Just what he didn't need! Poor little Sharron was also unwell with this virus last night but she seems to be better today. Think maybe we need to be quarantined!!

I actually don't feel right 'complaining' about our trials at the moment, yes we are living them and yes they are a worry and our life is revolving around them - particularly the wrist incident which is ongoing, but a family that we love and have grown up with in country NSW is living a nightmare at the moment. Jess, who is 17 and doing her VCE, has been diagnosed with a degenerative brain disorder. Without warning it struck. There is no treatment. The prognosis is not good. She is having many invasive and painful tests. No one is sure which path it will take or how quickly. This has weighed heavily on my mind for the few weeks I have known, the 'horsey one' is the same age and they are very similar in personality, I can not imagine how I would even begin to cope or understand if the situation was reversed. Please keep her, her parents, brothers and sisters and extended family (which includes my Aunty Judy)in your prayers.

Today has been productive, a flourless orange cake, cornflake & choc chip cookies, Greek lemon chicken soup, pumpkin soup, savory scones and a rhubarb crumble. Add to this the multiple loads of washing and we have been busy. I shall sleep well!

I can't back any of this up, the sun or the activity with photos as I have lost? misplaced? or had it borrowed? my camera card reader. If it is on the 'horsey' ones desk we may never see it again!!!
